Why a receipt can’t be read
Receipt can’t be read? What each message means — blurry photo, wrong file, file too large — and how to fix it: upload a clearer receipt or type it in.
RevoSpend never fills in an expense from a guess. When receipt scanning can’t read a receipt, the form tells you why and leaves the fields to you. The receipt stays attached either way.
What the message means
| Message | What happened |
|---|---|
| The file couldn’t be processed. | The file is damaged or isn’t an image or PDF RevoSpend can open. |
| This document couldn’t be read. | No receipt could be made out — for example a blank page or a photo of something else. |
| The file is too large to read. | The image is too large. Use a smaller photo or scan. |
| The reading service didn’t respond. | Try again in a moment, or fill in the fields yourself. |
On the Receipts page, the same receipts show as Illegible, Not a receipt, Not read, File too large or Reading error.
Attach another receipt
Click Replace receipt and choose a clearer photo or the original file. RevoSpend reads it again.
Or fill in the fields yourself
Type the merchant, date, amount and tax from the receipt, then save or submit as usual.
A reading that ends in an error doesn’t count toward your plan’s document reads. Uploading the exact same file again doesn’t count twice either.
When the receipt was read, but something needs a look
Sometimes RevoSpend reads the receipt but flags part of it — the photo is blurry or cropped, the receipt is handwritten, there are several documents in one photo, or the totals don’t add up. The fields are filled, and the ones to check are marked. Compare them with the receipt before you submit.
Tips for a readable photo
- Lay the receipt flat and fit the whole receipt in the frame, including the total at the bottom.
- One receipt per photo.
- Avoid shadows, glare and creases. Use good light.
- For e-invoices and e-archive invoices, upload the PDF instead of a photo of the screen.
